Sicko

Who is going to be seeing this movie? It’s the latest from Michael Moore…this time, he is attacking the U.S. health care system.

Here’s the trailer…

It comes out tomorrow, and I really think I would like to see it sometime this weekend…perhaps on Sunday, since we’re not doing anything else that day. It’s playing at the Showcase Cinemas in Revere, just one town over from us. I’ll see if Mike wants to go, too, and then I’ll go to Fandango to buy tickets.

I received an e-mail today from an online activist group that I’ve signed petitions for in the past…MoveOn.org. They are asking people to sign a pledge to go and see “Sicko” sometime this weekend. There’s a link to it on the home page of the MoveOn site.

This is from the e-mail:

When you go see Sicko, you’ll hear true stories like these:

  • A middle-class couple with insurance move into their daughter’s basement after cancer forces them into bankruptcy.
  • An American woman goes undercover in Canada in search of prescription drugs for her illness.
  • Richard Nixon’s secret White House tapes reveal he decided to authorize the first HMOs because “the less care they give them, the more money they make.”
  • A doctor employed by an insurance company testifies before Congress about letting a man die to save her company money—then getting a promotion.

Like most of Michael Moore’s movies, this one has a point of view. It’s an argument to change our failing health care system. And it comes just in time.

The next president will have to take on health care. Several 2008 candidates—John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich, and Barack Obama—have plans to guarantee affordable health care for everyone with a public insurance option. These are the most forward-thinking proposals ever seen in a presidential race.

But the HMOs, big health insurers, and drug companies are busy trying to buy off White House hopefuls with lots of campaign cash. They want to keep making billions by denying Americans affordable health care.

So after the movie, we’ll ask presidential candidates to promise not to take campaign money from any of the industry’s PACs, lobbyists, or executives. And to turn up the heat, we’ll pass out fliers to movie-goers encouraging them to call up their favorite candidate.

Not one more person should suffer or die because our leaders won’t stand up to the companies at the root of our health care problems.

Infomercial Stuph

Have you ever bought anything from an infomercial? If so, did it live up to its promises?

I have never bought anything directly from an infomercial, as in calling on the phone in the middle of the night to buy it. But I HAVE bought things that were sold on infomercials at one time, but I bought them in stores. For example, a George Foreman grill. I know he started out selling them on late-night TV, but now they are in stores everywhere.

I also bought a Super Slicer, but once again, this was at a store. This goes way back…back when the old Lechmere stores were going out of business. They had tons of stuph marked down, and I got this thing for ten bucks. It’s pretty good…I still use it.

But what annoys me about some of the infomercials now is that nowhere in the presentation do they give you the price. They want you to call them to get the price, and no doubt the person on the phone is trained to be a pushy salesperson. Fortunately, most of these companies have websites, on which they DO put the price.

For instance, I was having trouble sleeping and was watching this infomercial for something called the Fein Multi-Master. Not that I want or need one of these things…Mike certainly has enough power tools already, that do the stuph that this thing does…but I was bored, watched, and was annoyed over the lack of a price. I feel it is deceptive to expect people to call and order the thing, without first knowing the price. It’s deceptive to try to get people to buy thngs that they might not be able to afford. I mean, would YOU ever buy anything without knowing how much it cost first? I wouldn’t, and nor would I call to ask, and subject myself to a pushy salesperson.

The price does seem to be kind of high to me…close to $300, made iin 4 easy payments of $69.95. I guess they figure that people who see it will want it so badly that they’ll shell out anything to get it.

Not me. This sort of thing pisses me off.

I think I am going to use some of my PayPerPost money to buy a refurbished iPod….the 2GB Nano (shown above). I think I like the black one better than the white.

But I’m not getting it right now. I was looking at my PayPal account, trying to find out how to transfer funds from PayPal to our bank account. It takes 3-4 days for a funds transfer to go through. Now this would be kind of a pain any time I want to spend some of my PPP money someplace where they don’t take PayPal (such as the Apple online store). So I’ve applied for the PayPal debit Mastercard. Since it’s not a credit card, I would think that they don’t require a credit check. It looks to me that all I need is a PayPal account with a bank account attached to it, and I have that. So they should give me one of these cards.

Then, whenever I want to buy anything with my PPP money, I can, and not have to wait for funds transfer. I just need to wait a few weeks now, for the card!
———-
PPP still hasn’t fixed my page rank scores. But I managed to find two opps to take yesterday, and one so far today, so it’s no biggie. They’re still working on it over there, so I’m being patient with them. And I STILL won’t do payday loan opps.

But I’ll survive. Some people over on the forums are acting as if this glitch is the end of the world. But, as Kat said on her blog last night, if PPP didn’t exist at all, what would they have? Nothing, unless they found some other way to make money sitting on their asses at home doing a few minutes of typing. You can read her post, as well as my response to it HERE.
