Important food recall

at Stop & Shop.  I copied the following from MyFoxBoston.com:

Stop and Shop is recalling butternut squash in prepared turkey and ham holiday dinners. We are asking the media for assistance in making the public aware of the following:
· The recall applies to 24-ounce sides of butternut squash packaged in holiday meals
· The recall is being issued because the squash contains an undeclared egg allergen and because of other quality issues
· The recall applies only to sides of squash packaged in holiday meals and not to any other products
· Customers are asked not to consume the squash, but instead to return the squash to their local Stop & Shop for a $12 refund
· Starting tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. a customer hotline will be available at 800-767-7772. Information is also available on the Stop & Shop website: www.stopandshop.com

As far as I know, Stop & Shop stores are pretty much only in the northeastern U.S., mostly in New England, but I think they have them in NY and NJ, as well.  These prepared holiday dinners seem to be very popular, given the number of people I see hauling the boxes of them out of the stores.  They are an excellent choice for people who can’t or don’t want to cook, but still want to have their holiday dinner at home.  Everything is all cooked, and the package comes with instructions for re-heating.

Even if you don’t live in Stop & Shop territory, you may have some family or friends who do.  If there’s a chance they bought one of these meals, please let them know about the recall.

You can buy squash that is already peeled and cut up, but not cooked.  This isn’t a part of the recall, so it’s safe to buy from Stop & Shop.  There are probably instructions on the package on how to cook it.  Basically, you can just boil it until it’s tender, and then mash or puree it if you’d like.  Add a little butter and/or brown sugar, if desired.  Not quite as easy as having Stop & Shop cook it for you, but still easy enough.

Butternut squash is YUMMIE!  I bought a whole one for our Toikey Day feast, which I will make into the famous Old Sturbridge Village Gourd Soup.  Yumyumyumyumyum! :D
