Sex & The City

There was a pretty good turnout for the 12:45 PM showing today…I think a lot of people took off from work to see this in the afternoon, before it gets really crowded at the evening shows.  I was a bit surprised to actually see more guys there than I’d expected.  This is the mother of all chick flicks, I didn’t think that many guys wanted to see it.  Maybe some of them were dragged there by their wives/girlfriends, who knows?

All I know was that no way does Mike want to see this thing, so I didn’t try to drag him to it.

I really enjoyed it.  I think that if you liked the show, you’ll also like this movie.  When the series ended several years ago, fans all wondered what happened next.  Well, in the movie, you’ll find out!

More beneath the jump, some of it may be a little spoilerish…

The movies picks up about five years or so after the series ended.  Carrie and Mr. Big are still together, and as the movie opens, they are buying an apartment, and Carrie is deep in the whirlwind of wedding planning.  But the big splashy wedding never happens, and they break up yet again, this time Carrie swears it’s for good.

Miranda, married to Steve, is living with him and their young son, Brady, in Brooklyn.  But we soon see that they are having problems, enough to piss off Miranda so that she moves out with Brady, planning to divorce Steve.

Charlotte finally has everything she’s ever wanted…a husband and a child.  She married Harry, converted to Judaism for him, and they tried to start a family.  But Charlotte couldn’t get pregnant, so she and Harry adopted a little girl from China, named Lily.  Of the four main characters, she is the only one who never really goes through any serious drama in this movie.  In fact, she has a few really funny moments, most notably in Mexico.  She is very happy with her life, and, in fact, gets some news later on the the flick that makes her even happier.

Samantha is living in Los Angeles, seemingly having “settled down” with a hunky actor, whose career she’s managing.  She still flies back to NYC to visit her three best pals a lot, though.  But, Samantha, being Samantha, she is starting to get restless.  She sees this hunky guy next door, who has sex every night with different women, and she starts being quite the voyeur.

Now, of course I am not going to tell you how it all ended.  I didn’t find the ending too predictable, throughout the story, I thought that things could go either way…Carrie and Big could just as easily get back together, or Carrie just moves on and remains the quintessential New York bachelorette.  Same with Miranda & Steve, etc.  You’ll just have to see the movie to find out!

Most of the original cast from the show is back, in addition to the four main characters, Mr. Big, Harry, and Steve, we also see Carrie’s gay pal Stanford and Charlotte’s gay pal Anthony again.

A new character was Carrie’s personal assistant, Louise, played by Jennifer Hudson, of “American Idol” and “Dreamgirls” fame.  She and Carried click, because the younger woman reminds Carrie a lot of herself when she first came to NYC many years ago, looking for “labels and love”.

This was really a fun movie.  It’s rated R for language, nudity and sex scenes, pretty much what was in the TV show.  Definitely NOT for the kids!  I was also glad that no one at my showing brought any kids; they do not belong at a movie like this.  But you know, some people are stupid and selfish…

I had a great time! :D
