WHY…

…can’t people mind their own business, and not get all nosy over what they see other people buying at the store?

A long time ago, I worked in a small town drugstore. This was one of those crappy little towns where everybody knew everybody else’s business, whether you liked it or not. Part of the problem was that most of the people there were stupid, and had nothing better to do than to be nosy.

The teen pregnancy rate in this town was rather high, I noticed. No doubt that this was because for many of these kids, our drugstore was the only place in town to buy condoms, many of them didn’t have cars to get to some other store. They didn’t want to buy condoms at our store, because many of the people who worked there not only were big gossips, but they often knew the kids’ parents. What teen wants to buy condoms from someone who’s going to be on the phone to his or her parents three seconds later.

I was never like that, though. I hated living in that town, and was just there, biding my time, until we could move someplace else. I always was considered to be a bit of an outsider there, because I didn’t gossip, and I had little in common with any of these people.

But soon, I became a friend to many of the local teens. I eventually became the manager of that store, and I hired the good ones to work for me. I was always very nice, and tried to be as flexible as possible when it came to their school activities and such.

However…the thing that I became known for was that I would sell them condoms, and not tell anyone. The way I see it, they are probably going to be having sex anyway. I would MUCH rather see them using protection, than having unplanned pregnancies that they are not ready for.

Once they realized that I wasn’t friendly with any of the town gossips, and kept pretty much to myself, they realized that I coud be trusted. I would even tell them when I’d be working alone at the front register, and that’s when they’d come in and buy their condoms. I was always very discreet, and made sure as best as I could that no one saw what they were buying.

It’s not just condoms that some people feel embarassed to buy. Another thing that some were nervous about being seen buying were incontinence products. Yanno, like adult diapers and stuff. But the fact is, people buy these because they really need them. When you get older, you might lose some of your muscle control down there, and have problems holding it in, until you can get to a bathroom. There is no shame in it, it just comes with getting old.

I’ve long since left Gossipville…but now I hope that the people there realize that they can now buy things like condoms and adult diapers on the internet. Then they don’t have to feel self-conscious at the store anymore. The packages come in plain boxes…not boxes that say, in glaring red letters, “YOUR ADULT DIAPERS ARE HERE!”. So the mail carrier doesn’t even have to know what is in the package.

Also, elderly folks often can’t get out as much as they used to, so having their supplies delivered to them definitely is a plus.

But I still wish people would mind their own business when it comes to what they see other people are buying at the store.
